Sri. Bharadwaja Maharshi Picture

Bhardwaj Rishi was father of Guru Dronacharya and grandfather of Ashwatthama. Bharadwaj Maharshi is one of the seven important Hindu Sages. As an infant Bharadwaja Maharshi was found abandoned on the banks of River Ganges. On seeing the radiant child on the bank of River Ganges the Celestial beings Marudganas picked him and brought him up. Then he was given to king Bharata (after whose name India was named, Bharath) and his wife Sunanda Devi for adoption. Bharadwaj Maharshi is said to be from the lineage of Sage Angirasa. The Bharadwaj Maharshi is a great scholar having learnt the Vedas (Repository of knowledge) which contains knowledge in all the fields. He was a great Guru and his disciples were many from different walks of life including kings to whom he has taught warfare also. It is said that Bharadwaj Maharshi has performed immense penance and obtained boons from Lord Indra (The King of Gods). When Indra appreared before him he asked for a fourth lease of life only to master the Vedas. Such was his thirst for knowledge. He had also authored a treatise on Vaimanika Sastra (Aeronautical discipline) including materials, machinery and control of huge Aeroplanes which can be considered as Air ships used for planetary and inter-planetary space. He was also a great physician who healed the public. He constructed Hospitals, Nursing homes, Educational Institutions, Hostels etc., He took great pains in ameliorating the sufferings of the poor and the sick. There is a temple dedicated to Saptha Rishis (Seven Sages) among whom Bharadwaj Maharshi is one, on the banks of river Godavari at Antharvedi, Sakhinetipalli Mandal, East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh.

Sri. Adi Sankara Charyulu Picture

Shankara was born on "Chaitra Shudda Panchami of 788 A.D" in the vishwaBrahmin community to Sri Sivaguru and Aryamba in or near Kaladi in central present day Kerala. According to lore, it was after his parents, who had been childless for many years, prayed at the Vadakkunnathan temple,Thrissur that Sankara was born under the star Ardra. His father died while Shankara was very young. Shankara's upanayanam, the initiation into student-life, had to be delayed due to the death of his father, and was then performed by his mother. As a child, Shankara showed remarkable scholarship, mastering the four Vedas by the age of eight.
From a young age, Shankara was inclined towards sannyasa, but it was only after much persuasion that his mother finally gave her consent. He only received her consent when bathing in a pond one day. A crocodile caught hold of his leg. Shankara appealed to his mother, who had arrived at the pond, asking for permission to become a sanyasi. His mother finally gave consent, only to have the crocodile let go of young Shankara. Shankara then left Kerala and travelled towards North India in search of a guru. On the banks of the Narmada River, he met Govinda Bhagavatpada, the disciple of Gaudapada. When Govinda Bhagavatpada asked Shankara's identity, he replied with an extempore verse that brought out the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Govinda Bhagavatapada was impressed and took Shankara as his disciple. The guru instructed Shankara to write a commentary on the Brahma Sutras and propagate the Advaita philosophy. Shankara travelled to Kashi, where a young man named Sanandana, hailing from Chola territory in South India, became his first disciple. According to legend, while on his way to the Vishwanath Temple, Sankara came upon an untouchable accompanied by four dogs. When asked to move aside by Shankara's disciples, the untouchable replied: "Do you wish that I move my ever lasting atman ("the Self"), or this body made of flesh?" Realizing that the untouchable was none other than god Shiva himself, and his dogs the four Vedas, Shankara prostrated himself before him, composing five shlokas known as Manisha Panchakam. At Badari he wrote his famous Bhashyas ("commentaries") and Prakarana granthas ("philosophical treatises") 788 to 820 CE.. This is the mainstream scholarly opinion, placing Shankara in mid to late 8th century CE. These dates are based on records at the Sringeri Sarada Pitha, which is the only matha to have maintained a relatively unbroken record of its Acharyas; starting with the third Acharya, one can with reasonable confidence date the others from the 8th century to the present. The Sringeri records state that Shankara was born in the 14th year of the reign of "VikramAditya", but it is unclear as to which king this name refers. Though some researchers identify the name with Chandragupta II (4th. c. CE), modern scholarship accepts the VikramAditya as being from the Chalukya dynasty of Badami, most likely Vikramaditya II (733 to 746 CE), which would place him in the middle of the 8th century.

Jagadgurus of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham along with Period of Reign.

Sri Bharati Tirtha (born, 11 April 1951 as Sitarama Anjaneyulu is the Jagadguru and Shankaracharya of the Advaitic Sringeri
Sharada Peetham. Born in Narasaraopet in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh to a pious Telugu Vaidiki Velanadu Brahmin couple, Shri Tangirala Venkateshwara Avadhani and Smt.Ananthalakshamma, he became a disciple of Shri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Swaminah. Sri Bharati attended a local school here. He excelled in his studies. Highly proficient in English and mathematics, he performed the duties of a brahmacharin meticulously. When he was 9 years old he got a chance to speak in Sanskrit in front of Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamigalu. When he received his blessings, he felt a change in himself. This was a turning point in his life. In 1966 Sri Mahasannidhanam was observing chathurmasya in Ujjain. The thought of acharya attracted Sri Anjaneyalu. He left home, reached Ujjain and prostrated before Mahasannidhanam. From that day Sri Bharati learned shastras from him. The Seer then appointed the boy as his successor on 11 November 1974. After initiation into Sanyasa, the young man meticulously followed the instructions of his Guru and impressed everyone with his knowledge and understanding of philosophy. Mahaswami spent huge amount time on meditation and was called as Tapas Chakravarty. Sri Bharati became the Jagadguru on 19 October 1989 following the mahasamadhi of the erstwhile Jagadguru Abhinava Vidya Tirtha on 21 September 1989.
